![]() Jamaica Blue Mountain - Wallenford Estate, Grade 1 Jamaica was discovered by Christopher Colombus on May 4th, 1494, and was subsequently settled by the Spanish, who ruled the island until 1655, when it was captured by a British expedition. Formal British control was confirmed in 1670. It is thought that Gabriel Mathieu de Clieu, Captain of the Infantry on French Martinique, apparently conceived the idea of introducing the coffee plant to that island while on a visit to France, sometime about 1720. The story of de Clieu and his tree, "is the most romantic chapter in the history of the propagation of the coffee plant". Once establishing coffee on Martinique he began spreading seeds and seedlings far and wide. Our Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee comes to us from The Wallenford Estate, located in Jamaica's Blue Mountain Range.
